Language and national character

After reading this book and some other materials for my intercultural management I've been able to slightly refine an old idea I had about how different languages express and modify the characters of the people that use it. Even though I'm not a linguist I think it's relatively accurate for some, for others I might as well get grilled. Comments are more than welcome.

• English: good for business and action-oriented. Also good for fantasising.
• Italian: temperamental.
• French: philosophical.
• Finnish: communicate the largest amount of information in the shortest amount of words possible. Also good for creating words.
• German: precise, pünktlich.
• Portuguese: playful, but at the same time rather melancholic.
• Spanish: baroque, but also depends on the speaker. Spanish speakers use it in a much more direct way than, say, Mexican speakers (because their culture is much more direct).
• Dutch: I'm having my first class today, so maybe I'll be able to tell you something in a year.

Could a Japanese speaker please explain what does no mean?

Cafe Tacuba

One of my favourite bands and arguably one of the most popular in Latin America, Cafe Tacuba was formed in the late 80's in Ciudad Satelite, Naucalpan, Estado de Mexico (a suburb of Mexico City very close to where I grew up). Their music is very eclectic with influences from rock, ska, norteña, hip hop, ballad, metal, tango, ranchera, etc., and cannot be rigidly classified as Rock en Español (it is said that not two of their songs are in the same genre). Even though they sing entirely in Spanish, they also have a loyal anglophone following. In their tours they have filled stadiums and other concert venues around Spanish-speaking Latin America, one of the most notorious was packing over 120,000 people in the Zocalo (main square) of Mexico City. Rock en Español

Taken from Wikipedia:

"Spanish language rock and roll (Spanish: Rock en Español) borrows heavily from American, British, Irish, and Australian rock and roll music and from traditional and popular music of Spanish-speaking cultures (cumbia, ranchera, rumba, tango, etc) and has evolved from a cult-like music movement to a more well established music genre. Today, rock en español includes bands from all over Latin America (with especially strong rock scenes in Mexico and Argentina), France, Spain, and the United States."

Recommended book: "Cultures and Organizations: Software of the Mind"

I just finished reading this book for my class of Intercultural Management, and I really liked it. There is only one thing that I don't really understand, and that's the Uncertainty Avoidance Index, because in my experience Latin Americans are much better at handling unknowns and improvising than say, Northern Europeans, but the book says that Uncertainty Avoidance is much higher in Latin countries than it is in Northern Europe. Will have to think about it.

Another thing I realised is that I understand now why I was able to adapt so well to living in Finland (and now Belgium): I was not raised so much as a Mexican. While growing up my home environment was much more conductive to discussion, and my parents always insisted on us being independent. I'm very glad for that.

Mexican food abroad

This is a theme that I'll keep on talking about, so bear with me. I was looking for some other information when I saw this article (The taco that ate Sweden). Whereas the situation is something that I definitely encountered before when I lived in Finland, I really feel the urge to educate all those that can read this that hard shell tacos are not Mexican. In fact, as the article says, most Mexican food found outside of North America is as Mexican as I'm Russian, i.e. not very much, and finding restaurants that don't have nachos with cheese in their menu is really hard (there are some honourable exceptions such as La Fonda de la Madrugada in Tokyo or La Panza es Primero in Madrid). As for the ingredients, it's easier just to ask a Mexican where to get them or just bring them over.

Tex-Mex food can be good food, but it's not Mexican!

Mexican film directors in Hollywood

I came accross an article depicting the artistic relationship between Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, and couldn't help to be a little moved by their self-professed admiration for each other, and the assistance and cross-pollination they've given to each other.

"Babel", "Children of Men" and "Pan's Labrynth" will be released during this fall, and I for one plan to watch them.

Things that I've learned/discovered in the last 10 years

It is now 10 years that I graduated from Junior High and entered High School. After an uneasy start of my teens, in the latter I became the person that I am now. After some thinking, these are some of the things that I've learned since:

• There is good people in this world, besides those found close to me. ”The more I meet people, the more I like my dog” doesn't apply, even though I really like dogs.

• There are two ways to get rid of a bully: ignore him or kick his butt.

• Speaking English doesn't necessarily make you international. Not speaking it makes you lose out. Regardless of whether we like it or not, it's the language of globalisation.

• I really hate snobbishness. Knowing you're from a certain (privileged) group is fine by me, but excluding everybody else just because of that is stupid. I'm referring mostly to the naco-fresa dichotomy and related social illnesses here.

• -20°C is not cold, unless it's also windy (then it's REALLY cold).

• It is possible to find love outside of your friends and family, you just have to be brave enough to search for it and wise enough to recognise it and grow with it.

• The first step to become a good (or at least decent) cook is to like food. Everything else flows from there.

• Yes, it is possible to learn languages as weird as Finnish if it's not your mother tongue.

• I'm actually the only punctual member of my family.

• Don't assume you're right only because you know something.

• Search for different sides of a story. That's why I keep on reading newspapers I won't necessarily agree with.

• You're able to learn anything you want as long as you put your mind to it, including (but not limited to) cartwheels.

• Aikido has shown me to flow like water, flexible like wood and strong like stone, the difficult part is knowing when to be each.

• I'm not patient enough to be a software developer, much less a scientist... but engineering showed me how things work, and how to learn how new things work. Now if only humans were so easy, but then we wouldn't be human.

• Don't think in terms of us and the foreigners. Think of people like you and me. You might be the foreigner next time.

• There might be more cultural differences between people of your own country than between you and somebody from accross the globe.

• One stupid comment at the wrong time can sour relationships almost forever.

• Help people help themselves.

• All my life I wanted to be an adult. Now that I'm one, I try to keep on smiling as a kid.

• Music makes my day.

• I don't like most R&B & hip hop songs these days, but Outkast is pretty OK. I'm still mostly a Rock (mostly Alternative, Punk or En Español) kind of guy, but found out that traditional Latin American music (ranchera & mariachi, tambora, corridos, marimba, samba e pagode, axé & tango) are quite nice too.

• Try to keep a clean environment around you, even if you're lazy. It helps organise your ideas. I don't always succeed on this one.

• Peace, silence and solitude don't bite, as long as you don't overindulge.

• For a techie guy, I can be very political when I want to (and even when I don't want to).

• 4 years of Models United Nations mean that I am compelled to watch news every day. Not many people of my age group do so, which means they don't know what's going on with the world we are inheriting.

• Like Thomas L. Friedman said, ”The world is flat”. A great book, by the way.

I'll think of some other stuff later on.

República Árabe Saharahuí Democrática

La República Áraba Saharahuí Democrática es un país que fuera colonia española que no es reconocido por muchos estados fuera de África y el mundo hispanoparlante puesto que su territorio está en disputa con Marruecos (en algunos mapas se encuentra como Sahara Occidental). Es una pena dado que ellos reclaman por el mismo derecho de autodeterminación de los pueblos que tienen todos los demás países, y que es parte de la Carta de las Naciones Unidas. Hay un referéndum que determinaría el futuro de los habitantes de este territorio, pero Marruecos y Francia lo siguen bloqueando después de más de 10 años porque no les conviene que haya un país hispanoparlante en esa parte de África. Para desgracia de los Saharahuíes, su lucha por la autodeterminación no es tan ”sexy” como aquella que en su momento tuvo Timor Leste, y aunque son apoyados por la mayoría de los países hispanoparlantes y la Unión Africana, no ha habido mucho progreso con su situación desde que el Frente Polisario depuso las armas.

Movies not to see when you're flying

I have recently seen two movies not recommended for those with frequent flyer platinum status: World Trade Center & United 93. Both were actually not very good from the cinematic point of view, but brought back the memories from September 11^th, 2001. Do you remember what you were doing then?

I definitely do. We had a meeting with some suppliers that day. After leaving the meeting, we took a cab and there we heard from the driver that something had happened in NY. When we got to my boss's hotel, everybody was in the lobby watching CNN. I remember thinking that this was something out of Hollywood, and immediately called my mom to check if my dad was not in the States. He wasn't, but a friend of the family was (we heard later from him that he was fine). When I took the commuter train back home everybody (mostly Finns who are usually very reserved) was talking about the day's events. When I got home I couldn't stop watching TV until I fell finally asleep. A co-worker was flying to Britain. He got home 7 hours late.

March 11^th was similar. I read the news on the BBC website and immediately called our Spanish office. They were all OK and I then called a friend of mine who lives in Madrid. He was rather freaked out because he usually takes one of those trains to go to school, but he didn't that day. That night there was an anti-terror rally in Helsinki, and I attended with my Spanish friends. One good friend of mine just couldn't stop crying (even though I believe nothing happened to any close people to her), and I remember that it broke my heart. And to think that it was my birthday...

The Islamic influence in Europe

Ramadan is widely celebrated near my school. Walking down the streets you find a lot of women with headscarves and other protective clothing. There is talk about agreeing on some sort of European Islam, but the Muslim world itself is torn between tradition and modernity, religiousness and secularism, and the Muslims here have to deal with an unfamiliar (and I guess sometimes threatening) environment. I can only start guessing what goes through their heads when their bazaar is next to the red light district of Brussels, for example. I hope that there is some sense in all parties involved in these discussions, as these are trying times for us all.

Brussels the melting pot

The city where I'm now based is truly a melting pot. Walking accross the street you can listen to 10 different languages, and if you're not used to it (as opposed to actually craving it like I did) I suppose it can be a little overwhelming. The difference with, for example, France, is that all the different communities tend to live more or less together, which isn't easy, but requires tolerance from everybody involved. To give an example, on Friday I was partying with the Erasmus exchange guys, who come from Spain, Finland, France, England and Poland. On Saturday I was out with a French friend who has lived in Finland, New Zealand, Ecuador and now here. On Sunday I was with some Mexican friends walking through downtown, and this week I plan to have a beer with a British friend who was in Japan and is working here now. Another good friend of mine (Kiwi, but lives in Singapore) told me the other day that my pictures in Flickr make Brussels look like a more interesting place than he thought of given the impression he had from the news, and I have to say that he's right, this is a much more interesting place than it is regarded of. As long as it stays so in the right ways everything is fine.

Suomalaisuus epä-suomalaisille

Nyt kun olen ollut ulkomailla olen huomannut että olen ehkä ennemmän suomalainen kuin olisin edes ajatellut. Jätän kengät eteiseen, hikoilen koko ajan koska on liian kuuma minulle ja olen ollut tosi yllättynyt että olut voi olla niin hyvää ja halpaa. Kun olen koulussa suomalaisten kanssa tuntuu hyvältä ja kun kuuntelen suomea kadulla hymyilen tsekseni. En tiedä vielä mitä on minulle tapahtunut, mutta kuusi vuotta on pitkä aika, ja se näkyy. En ajatele itseäni vain meksikolaisena, mutta en voi oikeasti sanoa että olen jotain muuta kuin joku tyyppi joka asui Suomessa kauan ja jolla on nyt, ulkomailla, vähän Suomi-ikävä.

Joka tapauksessa, ei ole niin ikävä että voisin juoda piimää. Salmari on tervetullut.

Propuestas políticas

Yo creo que el meollo del asunto de las elecciones presidenciales es que tal vez por votar por alguien no mejore la situación, pero el que esté en la silla presidencial tiene toda la facilidad para empeorarla (López Portillo, por ejemplo).

En mi comunidad cuando vivía en México hice mi servicio social en un orfanatorio, y aunque no pudimos darles a todos todo lo que nosotros hubiéramos querido sí logramos que su situación mejorara. Lástima que perdí contacto con ellos. Mi madre también ha estado muy metida en labores de beneficencia, y cuando hay que colaborar por sismos o huracanes seguido mandamos ayuda a los centros de acopio.

Otra de las cosas que he intentado convencer a mi familia (y al que me oiga) es que sepan quién es el diputado/senador por su distrito. Si algo no les parece, quéjense con él, que para eso lo eligieron, pero en México todavía no tenemos esa cultura democrática.

Con lo que no puedo estar de acuerdo contigo edwinguerra es en tu opinión de que los que estamos en contra de AMLO o estamos beneficiados por el sistema o hemos sido idiotizados por la televisión. Perdóname pero es una falta de visión igual como llamar a los perredistas nacos, ignorantes y cosas por el estilo, aunque yo en lo personal no esté de acuerdo con sus posturas. (he estado fuera algunos días y me he dado cuenta cómo la discusión en este grupo ha degenerado a esos términos).

Los temas de México son muchos y variados, pero a mí los que más me preocupan son los siguientes:

1) Pobreza y "distribución de la riqueza": Es un tema obvio y que podríamos discutir hasta el cansancio, pero es obvio que se necesitan soluciones más allá del aventarle dinero sin ton ni son. Ahí no se trata sólo de tener niveles escalonados de impuestos y programas sociales, sino de generación de riqueza y valor agregado (lo cual sólo se consigue con una población altamente educada, infraestructura adecuada y con un sistema que permita la generación de empleos por medio de empresas privadas, las cuales serían en su mayoría empresas pequeñas y micro). Yo no creo que podamos salir de pobres si sólo le quitamos a los más ricos, si no que debemos de estimular que además de pagar impuestos sus empresas se queden en el país.

2) Recaudación tributaria: Me parece risible que el nivel de recaudación de impuestos en México comparado con PIB es menor que Botswana. Sí, que los ricos paguen impuestos, pero también los ambulantes, y que sea más fácil pagar impuestos (p.ej. por medio de deducciones automáticas después de un estimado).

3) Empleo: El millón de empleos anuales que necesita el país no los va a crear el gobierno (y si los crea el gobierno terminaría siendo un juego de suma cero, porque se pagan con impuestos de los pocos contribuyentes que tenemos en lugar de generar valor propio), sino que se tiene que estimular la creación de empresas por particulares. ¿Cómo? Con un marco legal que protega tu inversión, con tasas de interés lo suficientemente bajas para que puedas pedir un crédito (aunque sea micro) y con certidumbre financiera para que te lo den, con una tramitología que no sea así de engorrosa para empezar tu negocio y que es una completa pesadilla para cerrarlo o declararte en quiebra. Historias como las de las Mujeres de Jiquilpan deberían de repetirse muchísimo más seguido.

4) Educación: No puede ser secuestrada por los gremios de maestros, tiene que ser bien pagada pero también tiene que haber estandarización y homologación de los parámetros de la enseñanza. No puedes subir la calidad de lo que enseñas si a tí como maestro no te examinan, y tus programas no son revisados. Mis padres son egresados del Poli y aunque orgullosamente burros blancos, les dan tristeza algunos aspectos del estado actual de su alma mater, como los porros. De la UNAM, ese es otro rollo... yo no entiendo cómo quieren conseguir chamba de economistas citando "El Capital"... aunque hay otras carreras con niveles muchísmo mejores. La investigación científica de ambas es de primerísimo nivel y debería de apoyarse. En cuanto a las universidades privadas, deberían de homologarse también, porque hay desde las muy buenas hasta las francamente patito. Yo no estoy en contra, p.ej., de que AMLO cree otra universidad, pero me parece totalmente contraproducente que sus estándares sean tan bajos.

5) Energía: No me voy a meter al debate de Pemex y la CFE, pero ¿alguien se ha puesto a pensar qué vamos a hacer cuando se nos acabe el petróleo?

El problema no es si la globalización existe o no, sino qué vamos a hacer al respecto. Cruzarnos de brazos y seguir peleándonos no sirve de nada.

Post post-electoral

Posteado cuando vivía en Finlandia.

En una democracia no todos estarán de acuerdo en lo mismo, y esas opiniones (aunque a unos u otros les parezcan erróneas) se tienen que respetar.

Yo estoy de acuerdo con que se manifiesten los del PRD, pero bloquear Reforma no me parece, vaya, ni civilizado.

Yo, como muchos otros, voté con los pies, salí de mi país y mandé mi boleta desde el extranjero, y yo, como muchos otros, quisiera un mejor futuro para mi país, pero me parece que hemos sacado conclusiones totalmente diferentes de nuestras experiencias (y no, no soy ni rico ni niño popis ni nada por el estilo, soy un profesionista, sí, pero disto mucho de tener dinero).

Espero respeten mi opinión, que ahí les va:

* Yo vivo en un país donde se respetan las leyes (al punto de que si algo no está previsto por dichas leyes los agentes del orden no saben cómo reaccionar y dejan la situación en standby)
* Un país donde no hay grandes diferencias sociales entre clases (ni tampoco división) a tal grado que la gran mayoría se considera clase media, aunque no lo sea
* Un país donde TODOS, ricos y pobres por igual, pagan impuestos (que además son bastante altos)
* Donde existe un seguro social que paga pensiones, seguro médico y demás, pero que no está secuestrado por ningún sindicato sino que realmente sirve a sus derechohabientes
* Donde dos de las instituciones más respetadas son la policía y los maestros
* Donde existen los gobiernos de coalición, y hay una cultura política de respetar a mi adversario
* Donde llega a haber marchas, pero no plantones, y a nadie se le ocurriría tapar las principales avenidas de la ciudad porque se hace harakiri solito
* Donde yo decido a qué compañía le compro mi electricidad o mi servicio de teléfono, y me lo conectan el mismo día sin tener que ir a dar "una ayudita"
* Donde todas las universidades son públicas, pero casi todas son buenas y tratan de cumplir las necesidades del mercado laboral
* Un país que además es internacionalmente de los más económicamente competititvos del mundo, y se ha subido al tren de la globalización. Exporta, maquila, hace investigación y tiene negocios con compañías importantes.

¿Ustedes creen que yo no quiero eso para mi México? ¿Y adivinen qué? No voté por AMLO. Porque sus propuestas en materia económica y social me parecen sacadas de una realidad nacional y mundial de hace 30 años, no actual. Porque conocía su historial de protestas, toma de pozos petroleros y demás. Porque, a final de cuentas, creo que el fin no justifica los medios. Él solito se ha encargado de confirmármelo. Si ahora hasta hay editoriales en la mismísima Jornada en contra de la asamblea/plantón/bloqueo . Porque me parece incongruente que esté en contra de unas elecciones federales para presidente, pero las de senador, diputado, gobernador o presidente municipal en donde a su partido le fue bien (y que fueron contadas por el mismo personal de casilla) no las impugna. Porque estoy de acuerdo con que se manifiiesten, pero no con que tomen la calle. Porque no se ha puesto en un plan de estadista, para realmente unificar a los mexicanos, sino ha querido seguir la confrontación, y es un conmigo o sin nada. Porque no creo que entienda que más del 50e los mexicanos no votamos por él, y lo peor del caso es que no le importamos en absoluto. Y lo más lamentable es que yo quisiera ser de izquierda, pero una izquierda socialdemócrata, de libre mercado (pero bien regulado), incluyente y moderna. Pero con él y con su partido, no la encuentro.
